Been a while since I posted... been working on a few things:

- the soft roof now has poppers all the way around, and is much more
secure in the wind and rain. It's never going to be waterproof of
course, but the six inch gap around the windows and B-pillar no longer
exists, which is nice.

- the gear selection is improved. Not perfect; I still mis-slot
occasionally, but on the whole it vaguely self-centres. I think there
might still be an issue with the clutch pedal, I think the auto adjust
quadrant is probably worn.

- the indicators self centre a little more readily, after some work
with a file on the release slot on the (hacked) xr4 wheel which was on
the car when I got it. A touch more is required, still, but I'm not
going mad; I'm considering investigating the possibility of fitting a
Fiat Coupe arm set.

- that bloody headlight[tm] - I've followed the loom back till it
disappears into the car, and investigated the fuse box, and can't find
anywhere the reason why it consistently blows the fuse for the
driver's side dipped beam every time I go over a road hump. I'll get
it, but I think the next step is to remove all the interior trim and
see what's going on. I've found some really bad joints under there...

- last but by no means least, I've been trying to find why the fiesta
throttle pedal has insufficient range fully to open the carb.
Investigated fitting a sierra pedal but it doesn't line up easily,
though it might be a later option. I've discovered that by bending the
fiesta end stop up I can increase the travel, which means it no seems
to open fully. the engine's a lot more responsive now. However, the
feel is atrocious. There's a very high pedal pressure with an over-
centre feel as the first throttle opens, then another high pressure as
the second choke is opened. It's okay at speed but tricky to drive
smoothly just above tickover - queueing for lights or traffic jams
etc. I don't think it's the routing of the cable, or the cable itself,
so I'm out of ideas... I think this winter the xr2i engine will get
put together and dropped in, which will solve that problem, but it's
annoying in the meantime.

Later,

Neil
