Theres nothing that says it has to be a reasonable distance.
As Martin says it may be considered as taking P but if theres no maximum 
distance specified i don't see what you can be done for.

You can drive to and from a pre booked MOT, even if it fails (as long as 
it's roadworthy).
So you can drive it from Bristol to your local garage and then take it 
home if it fails.
Even if it costs you a retest is still cheaper that trailer rental.
