Thanks Dave. The bodged up mess on the car when we bought it was once-
upon-a time a 57i. It can't be retrieved properly as the pipes have
been cut and stretched in diameter to fit the silly "turbo" fuel
economy gadget but I've temporarily used some old induction pipe from
another car so the filter is now sort of where it should be ('though
the filter is in a far from happy state, having spent a long time tie-
wrapped to the brake servo!)

The K&N rubber pipe had nearly chafed through with rubbing on the cam
covers (new ones may possibly be better designed to avoid that) so
I've refitted the Ford duct across the top of the engine (yet to do
the calcs. to see if the diameter of the opening to the rubber
coupling to the MAF on this is too small - may need to bin it and
fabricate something that can manage more flow).

I could buy a new filter and other gubbins to properly reinstate the
K&N but I've always been a fan of properly cooled air going into the
engine so am thinking along the enclosed air box route. If I can find
the energy, I'll make one out of GRP, but I may end up buying
something like a Green Storm. The universal carbon air boxes on eBay
all seem to have circa 75mm outlets so won't get laminar flow past the
MAF, and the likes of Pipercross Venom are unnecessarily expensive!

All the best,

Mark
