As the part has a split it would snatch on a drill bit. It really needs reaming with the exact size, with the part clamped with a suitable spacer in place. Not impossible on a DIY basis, but the result could be messy! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris" <[email protected]>

I'm pretty sure it's parallel, so I don't really understand why it isn't
a DIY job. Just stick it in a vice, find out what size the hole is and
then make it bigger.
That's what I would do, but I haven't needed to try it myself.

It could be parallel actually, too long since i saw one now.
But it might be stepped parallel like some of the much later Ford ones
are, 2 different sizes each side of the pinch bolt groove.

Isn't it parallel? - Not tapered if my memory serves me.

The mod to the front hub involves machining out the lower balljoint
taper to match the taper on the balljoint on the Escort track control
arm.
Not hard if you can find a taper reamer with a matching taper but i
don't know if you will.
You might need to make a tapered D bit type cutter first.

Thankyou once again for all the helpful advice. Just to update:
I've
almostt collected all new interior bits - only need to start bolting
them in place (after I've decided on the carpet options). I'm also
toying with ideas for door cards - if anyone has tried any mods with
something more modern and stylish your comments would be appreciated!

I've had a new cam belt fitted to be on the safe side, and four new
tyres all round, it's amazing how much better it handles now.
Jacking
advice came in very useful here - and the garage was very helpful.

Downloaded the manual from Quantum which is helpful - except where
bits come from different donor cars! Need a new ignition lock and
the
barrel I have has been filed to fit - only it doesn't very well.

Advice on the leak was spot on - not sure how the back window stayed
in as the glue didn't seem to be doing anythin useful! Decided (due
to not having enough time - and being a coward) to have it done for
me. Someone recommended Midland Windscreens (in Daventry, Northants:
01327 300233). I'd never used them before but was suitably
impressed.
They even re-blacked round the edge of the window glass and you can't
see the glue at all. Very tidy job and to me, well worth the £50.

Fiddled with the brakes a bit and managed to get them a little bit
better but I think the servo might be dodgy. I managed to pick up a
set of nearly new complete front hubs. This is where the next
question comes in - I believe there is a mod to be done to the hubs
to
accept an Escort ball joint pin. Can anybody tell me what this mod
is. In the manual it says not a DIY job but I run an engineering
shop
so shouldn't be a problem - if I could find the information needed.
Once again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

John
