When making my H4, I was supplied by Old Q with a roll of black carpet, a roll
of black felt and a roll of grey felt. The rest was up to me.

The way I was taught to make templates was to get a whole load of newspaper,
some glue and a good pair of scissors then, using a single sheet at a time,
push the newspaper into the space to be covered and turn it over at the desired
corners to form the shape of the pattern. Being soft, the newspaper can be
pushed around to follow the shape exactly - do not worry if it tears just patch
where necessary. Additional pieces of newspaper are glued on as required to
cover the whole area being considered.

When making the carpets for my H4, it was convenient to have many pieces that
overlap, leaving the edges "as is". Whilst these are no longer in concourse
condition after 11 years, the basic construction worked well. Fitting the felt
was a lot easier, by creating a rough shape that could then be pushed into
place onto ready applied glue as the material could be moulded to quite a large
extent, both expanded and contracted.

I made a more professional job on my Beauford with a "fully fitted" one piece
carpet using an old sewing machine to stitch the butted edges of adjoining
pieces together with a zigzag stitch. This was more to prove that I could do
it but now that the car has been on the road for some time, I realise that a
"one piece" setup is not convenient, requiring major items like seats to be
removed to get at certain features otherwise covered by carpet so the advice
here is think long and hard when making the patterns and joining the carpet as
to what access is required for servicing.

If you want perfect tucked edges, say around the door frames, it is necessary
to attach vinyl strip adjacent to the requisite edge by laying it face to face
pointing inwards and sewing parallel to the edge about 5 mm in from the edge.
The vinyl can then be folded back face up and wrapped over the door frame and
capped with what ever trim strip you are using. This does make a lot of
difference to the overall appearance. I will be doing this for the H4 when I
have some time to give it the TLC that is long overdue.
