I've stripped some front hub nuts on the Mondeo doing it with this method
but they have all been those nuts made up from layers of sheet rather than
solid metal.

Basically as Hamish says as tight as you can. I did break a torque wrench
when tightening them, so I no longer torque, I just get them as tight as I
can using normal bars.

Had a similar problem with my Beauford (Sierra based) when it was MOT'ed

From memory the figure for both Festa and Sierra rear wheel nuts is in
the region of 150 lbft in Druid units, which is outside the range of
most torque wrenches. In practice to achieve this it is me hanging on
to the end of a 2 metre bar and jumping up and down. Whilst this is not
a precise action, I have never had my H4 come loose after applying the
above technique nor have I stripped the threads. I did have to buy a
3/4 socket and bar to have something strong enough to sustain the load.

Subject: [Quantum Owners] Rear hubs on H4
After having some very werid handling issues I discovered that the
left rear hub was loose.
This was due to the big nut being loose by 6 or so turns. So this has
been tighened up after checking over the bearings. My question is that
does anyone know the torque this should be done up to?
