Hi Bill,
I have a unit that is a pram hood type frame covered in heavy vinyl
like these here:

It works well keeping rain and sun off and giving a 'barrier' against
interested interference. It has ventilators on the side and so will
even dry off wet cars inside. It's relatively cheap but not
physically secure. But it does not need planning permission and you
can take it with you when you move!

That's a pity, The car can live outside or get a folding canvas
garage. My 2+2 with a canvas hood lives in one quite happily.
