Hi all.
A funny thing happened on the way home from work on the other day....
well, it wasn't that funny and, now the clocks have gone back, it
wasn't really daytime either, but I was coming home from work.
The first symptom sounded like 'pinking' as I accelerated through
50mph. My first thoughts were of bad fuel or distributor slipping, as
it got worse, I started thinking that 20 miles was a long way to walk!
With some careful nursing and some jumping from brake to accelerator
to keep it running (must learn to heel/toe one day) i got home. By
then it sounded like a spark plug was rattling about every time I took
up power.
A first look revealed a spark and fuel at all 4 cylinders but pulling
the plug leads on 3 and 4 made no difference to the (lumpy) running,
pulling a lead on 1 or 2 prevented it from starting totally.
So 20 miles on 2 cylinders is possible, but not good fro your stress
levels.
My next job is to check the compressions, so I'm coming home via
Halfords today to get a tester.
My current best suspicion is a head gasket (or valve lifters maybe - 2
failing at the same time?), especially with the speed that this came
on at, my nightmare is a big crack between cylinders 3 and 4!
I'll pass on what I find but if this sounds familiar to anyone please
don't be shy, I'm having to drive the wife's Astra at the moment!

Regards
Dave English
