That type always go rusty on the outside, the power coating isn't brake fluid proof !
You can get them apart.
I've repainted them by stripping all the old powercoating off with a hot air gun and a wire brush, then either dipping in rust dissolving solution, or sand blasting (block all all outlets with old brake pipe fittings with stubs of pipe squashed flat and tank tape the rest).

Thanks Jim, The Haynes manual shows the master can be dismantled but you have to lever a large plastic cover away and I'm damaging it trying to do it. The outside of the master is quite rusty so ideally I'd replace but I'm still going to try and dismantle if I can. Haynes say its the same on post '86 1.4 and XR2's so I'll ring round tomorrow and see what I can get. Even if I get a used master I'd still want to rebuild it so I still need to dismantle.
