On the Ford part number

84SF 12100-MA

The 84 is the first year that basic part was produced, this can often be a clue
as to what car it came off.
I forget what the SF is.
The 12100 is the base part code, so most Lucas CVH distributors would have the
same code here.
The M is the actual specific version, eg 1.3, 1.6, XR3 etc
And the A is the revision of that version, in general all letters here will be
compatible but higher is newer.

So, a 84SF 12100-MC would be a later version of a 1.3 CVH distributor (it
doesn't exist but just showing an example) and would be compatible.
But a 84SF 12100-FA would be for a different engine and probably not compatible
but would look identical.

I'm sure there's a better explanation than this on the net.

The basic thing is that to use another part then the complete part number needs
to match except for the very last letter at the end.

For some reason Ford use this part numbering system on all there parts (it does
go a bit weird after 2000) but the actual Ford dealers use a Finis code which
isn't marked on the parts.
