Thanks Gary, that will help massively, just need to translate the
various flow routes onto my diesel properly, but from my initial look
it seems to confirm the top hose is the way to go.

I was expecting top-hose, because the engine picks up its coolant
water via the bottom hose.
If I return directly into the bottom hose then there would be a path
directly from the back of the head (hot), via the heater matrix
(potentially minimal/no cooling), and directly back into the engine
again (still rather warm) via the bottom hose.  Good for warming up
the engine when cold, but there is already a bypass hose in place for
this purpose.

Also, the area around the bottom hose is getting rather crowded.
Getting another pipe through would be tricky.  =o)
