This is my biggest worry about the H4 design.
The chassis is bonded between the H4 bodyshell and a separate floor section. 
The rubber strip down the sill hides the joint.
But the chassis is exposed in the engine bay and behind the rear seat in what 
Quantum call “the wet area”.
The wet area is where water that gets past the rear screen seals drips into and 
then drains out the 2 rear drain holes past the sills.
The only problem is that there are exposed chassis sections in the same area, 
and the “powder coating” that was supposed to be on the chassis seems to have 
actually been poorly applied paint, and has normally flaked off long ago.
The first s/h H4 i bought had heavy rust in this area (and this was about 6 
years ago), so much so i bought another unfinished kit to use for my project.
Hopefully i can improve the design in the this area before it rusts.

I'm sorry not to have responded earlier to the replies to my original message. 
Loss of password, much head-scratching and trench foot all kept me away from 
contributing.

Robert (Greig), High Wycombe is very close and I'd welcome the opportunity to 
pop over and compare notes and hints.

I'm just getting The Blue Pig ready for the MoT - always a fraught time, I hate 
tests of any sort - and have found something which causes me some concern but 
may come within the experience of fellow members. The sills have drainage holes 
in them. There is one fore hole to either side, about the diameter of the 
average small screwdriver, just behind the front wheel arch; and there are two 
aft holes each side, somewhat larger, perhaps the size of an old decimal 
ha'penny bit. The furthest aft, just before the rear wheel arch, is clear when 
explored with a delicate probe. The other one enables the longitudinal chassis 
member to be touched, and it's this that gives me concern as there's clearly 
some rusting going on here, some of which bungs up the hole.

Questions abound: do the sills and, or chassis members admit water? Should one 
or more of the rear holes be plugged and opened only to drain? Does this 
suggest that the chassis members are vulnerable to corrosion, rather than being 
fully-encased as I'd assumed? And why could I swear to hearing water sloshing 
around the other day when making halting progress through traffic?

My engine issue still stands and I'm now ever more of the opinion that I want 
to get an experienced H4 eye cast over it prior to any remedy. Driving is 
becoming less of a pleasure, especially on hard left-hand bends or where a 
left-hand turn is accompanied by vigorous acceleration or a less than smooth 
road surface (in other words, virtually everywhere bar motorways). I suspect 
new engine rubbers all round may be in order as I fancy it's got more "give" in 
it than it had a year and 10,000 miles ago. Is there anyone within 50 or so 
miles of Hemel / St Albans who may be prepared to have a look and offer advice?

Finally on my list of queries (I've been saving them up) is there a specific 
weather seals kit available for the H4 or is it a case of picking up items 
piece-meal? The window sealing rubbers in particular are not good, having 
apparently not been terribly well fitted in the first place!

I thank members in advance for any advice offered. Should any nearby require a 
hand with jobs on H4s or 2+2s, I'd be happy to oblige in an effort to get to 
know folks and to get to more physical grips with these rather lovely things.

  attitude and a sunny disposition, so I am hopeful of becoming 
  enlightened and delighted in the near future. My language whilst 
  driving may improve, too.
