It would help to know what engine you have currently and how any forward gears there were before they stopped working... You donor 'should' have a type 9 I think but may be an MT75. Type 9s come in two main types, short nose used with the four cylinder engines and a long nose from the v6 models and diesels. If you have a four pot engine, the short nose is easiest to use. The bell housing bolt patterns are all the same pattern so you should have no problems there. The overall length is not that different between four speed and five speed and I have heard of the props still being usable. What will need changing if going from a four speed to a five, is the position of the gearbox mount and possibly the gear lever position. An MT75 is a significantly different in appearance and will cause more issues... I take it you already have a type 9 box, so it should be relatively straightforward, but if replacing a 4 speed (type 2,3, Rocket,Bullet etc.) then it is not so straightforward, as the prop needs to be shortened, plus lots of other changes. It's been getting increasingly difficult to change gear, so I guessed it was on the way out. Anyway, I've located a (relatively) local Sierra 1.8LX 1991 for sale, so I'm thinking the way to go is to buy the whole car and rob the gearbox (at least I'll know if it works), sell as best I can the rest of the bits on ebay, and scrap the shell. Any advice (re the box). It looks like they will all fit (if 1.6, 1.8 or 2.0), the speedo if elec can be changed to my existing cable? Any other points to watch for?
