I bought this car early-mid 2012. It was my first car and I had little
knowledge on Quantums or the mechanics of cars at the time. Naive and
excited, I travelled up North to collect the car, handed over my money and
drove off without looking over the car thoroughly or even test driving it
(shakes head in dissapointment). I’m sure some of you will have seen this
car advertised last year and it did look a very appealing prospect.
However, the car was gutless, the suspension was bouncy and uncomfortable,
the gearbox whined like a dog and the wheel bearings were noisy. After
using the car for 6 months, the throttle cable snapped and this was the
last straw for me. I left the car for some time, frustrated and annoyed.
During this time I had undertaken a summer work placement with a company
that built race engines for Cobra’s and GT40’s. This got me back into the
thought of getting the car up and going again. I decided that I wanted to
stick a zetec in to replace the lifeless CVH lump so I started collecting
parts for a zetec conversion. After collecting 90% of the parts needed for
the conversion I lost enthusiasm and have no time or space for the car at
the moment. Here is some info on the car…

1987 Quantum Saloon for sale

Currently SORN and no MOT

Miles: 104,675

ENGINE

The engine currently in the car is a 1.6 CVH. The person who owned the car
before me said that the bottom end was RS turbo. At the time I was a bit
clueless so didn’t think anything of it. If it was genuinely RS turbo then
that would explain why the engine was so gutless as it had would have the
compression ratio for a turbo. I’m not sure if it is a RS turbo or not.
Everything has been disconnected from engine bar the engine mounts and
drive shafts.

Engine parts collected for Zetec conversion

- 1.8 Zetec 105ps, engine is in parts, all parts have been cleaned, the
valve have been lapped in, engine needs building

- 2.0 130ps cams

- Keihin Bike carbs off ZX6R, inlet manifold for zetec (carbs need spacing
to suit)

- Brand new gaskets for entire engine including valve stem seals

- Brand new ARP con rod bolts

- Brand new head bolts

- EDIS 4 module

- Ashley 4-2-1 exhaust system, rusty in some places. Manifold has got zetec
flange welded on.

- Original 1.8 wiring loom, exhaust manifold

- 1.6 Zetec flywheel

- Brand new cambelt kit with tensioners

- R6 Fuel Pump

GEARBOX

I have been told the current gearbox is from a 1.1. It’s whiney and noisy
so will need replacing.

I have got an LSD from a Series 2 RS turbo that I bought in good faith
having been told that it is in good working order.

SUSPENSION

The car is currently on standard xr2 struts with 60mm lowering springs at
the front and chopped 60mm springs at the back. I was going to change the
fronts to 1.4 springs and the rears to 1.1 springs but did not get round to
it. I have replaced the nearside wheel bearings and hub spline (Febi
Bilstein) and have another set of hub bearings and hub spline for the
offside to go in.

The front brakes are XR2, there are some drilled and grooved discs on the
car and the pads have a good bit of life left in them. The rears are drums,
not sure what off, standard 1.1 maybe.

INTERIOR

The inside of the car is very bare, there are no carpets or rear seats.
There are plastic door cards to cover the insides of the doors, pictured
off car. There is a window winding mechanism on drivers side which looks
like the part that connects to a handle has sheared off and there is no
mechanism in the passenger door. The sunroof functions fine but leaks
slightly. There is a very smart looking flocked dash, a bit dusty and a
nice dished rally style steering wheel in place. There are two bucket seats
in the interior secured to the floor by two custom aluminium brackets per
seat. On the drivers side these brackets have caused the floor to crack
slightly due to their sharp edges so would need removing and the fiberglass
repairing. On the passenger seat there is a hole in one of the sides,
pictured. The door seals have seen better days and leak a bit also so may
need replacing. Instrument cluster is dodgy, speedo does not go below
~25mph, fuel gauge worked but temp gauge didn’t and neither did rev gauge.
There is also a slight leak coming in through the bulkhead but should just
need some silicone to seal it up somewhere. The black paint that the
interior floor has been covered in has pealed away in some areas and there
is evidence of rust present on each sill, there is not a huge amount, both
sides are pictured. As soon as I noticed this I made sure to block off any
holes leading to the sills with duct tape, (have removed this for pictures
of the car) and the staining has not got any worse. If I was getting the
car back and running I would have cut a hole into the sill and cleaned up,
poured some wax oil and maybe used some expandable foam or something of
that sort etc.

EXTERIOR

The paintwork on the car currently is a little cloudy but still maintains a
deep colour. With an orbital polisher, or some elbow grease I’m sure it
would come up with a good shine. The paintwork is not perfect and there are
a few scratches, a couple of scuffs and some imperfections dotted around
the place. There is a blister on the rear bumper where someone has
re-sprayed it with a rattle can and it is slightly different shade, there
is also some overspray on the left rear light as pictured. At the beginning
of the ducktail wing there is some cracking in the gel coat on the left
side of the car, pictured. The seals around the rear lights, fog lights,
rear window, ariel and sun roof are not very pretty, pictured. The sealing
of the rear right side quarter window has lost it’s stick and is fully
removable, it is currently just resting there, pictured. I have bought some
special bonding glue to get them back in place, which I will include. The
front window seal could do with removing and re gluing. The car is
currently on some mk3 fiesta steel wheels with 4 good 155/70/13 tyres with
4-5mm tread. One of the front headlights is cracked and discoloured, I have
bought 2 good condition second hand headlights to go in. I have also bought
2 new weather strips for the doors to go in. The offside mirror has broken
off from it’s base and is cable tied in place. Nearside inner arch is
missing a thin strip of fiberglass, pictured and there is some damage
around the top of the arch caused by wheels too big for the car and it
being too low.

I have 2 sets of wheels that I will include in the sale also. Some 14x6 et
35 black 5 spoke wheels, the guy I bought them off said they were
Compomotives. It doesn’t have Compomotive stamped anywhere on the wheels,
they are very light though and some 13x7 Capri wheels. They will both need
refurbishing.

The V5 is present and is down as a 1.1, I haven’t changed this and have had
no issues insuring it as a 1.6 for the time that I have used it.

I’ve tried to be as honest as I can, I know this car has a lot of potential
and I know I will not make what I’ve spent on it but I would like to get
the car into safe hands and make sure it lives once again. I know this car
will be great when it is finished.

The car will need towing away on a trailer.

Viewings welcomed and advised before buying, I am based in Finchley
Central, North London, N3 postcode.
