Dear all,

I have an issue with my 2+2 that I'm hoping someone might be able to help
me with.
It runs a standard 1988 1.6 XR2 engine with the exception of a performance
ait filter & Sportex exhaust system.
I stopped using it for the winter months in January 2015, it was started on
a regular basis & taken out for reasonable runs when the weather allowed &
prior to be stood up it was used to commute 1000 miles per month.
I gave it an oil change about a month ago but at the time it was difficult
to read the level on the dipstick due to some creamy sludge where it had
condensated from being stood, due to this I over filled by about a litre &
then done a 70 mile journey but when nearly home I stopped at a junction
only to see a large cloud of blue smoke exit the exhaust.
I checked the oil level when home & promptly drained it to the correct
level but everytime using it since it has puffed out a cloud of smoke. This
occurs when the car is at running temperature, there is no smoke when being
driven or underload but only occurs when stopped at junction or roundabout
for example, it is usually quite a large cloud followed by a few smaller
puffs then stops again or stops when moving once again???
This has only happend since doing the oil change with too much oil so
assume it must be related to this.
When we went to Stoneleigh this year (300 mile round trip) it also felt a
bit down on power?
There are no rattles or knocks from the engine when either hot or cold &
the oil light goes out staright away when started from either hot or cold.
I have always used 10/40 semi synthetic oil within the CVH engine, the car
has had regular oil changes, all 4 spark plugs have a nice even firing tan,
it does not smoke from cold so very much doubt it is the valve stem seals &
these were changed about 18 months ago, it does not smoke all the time so
very much doubt it is the piston rings either.
I have checked the breather system & replaced the breather filter, the
filter was sludged up but pipes were relatively clear, there is a strong
vacume from the smaller pipe which goes from the bottom of the breather
filter to the carb so know this is also clear & since doing this the power
feels a bit better but it is still smoking when being stopped. When left to
tickover from cold & allowed to get up to temperature there is no evidence
of smoke, this only happens after a run & has a very strong rich oily smell.
When at tickover following a drive today there is some pressure coming from
the rocker cover when i took off the oil filler cap but not sure if this is
normal or not but it was not smoking from the cap & I really don't know
what to do next?
If there was any excess oil anywhere I would have expected it to have been
burned off by now as we have covered over 500 miles since this first
started?
I would really appreciate some assistance with resolving this issue as
reluctant to use at the moment in case it's something serious but I'm
hoping it's something simple I have over looked, any advice would be
greatly received.
Many thanks, Paul.
