I too was looking for something brighter on my 2+2. I looked at the LED H4 bulbs, but wasn't convinced as there wasn't really any performance data on them. In the end I read reviews for H4 bulbs and settled on Osram Night Breaker Unlimiteds (12V 60/55W). I bought a pair of them from a well known internet auction site for the same price as normal ones on the high street. I've only fitted one so far and you can tell that it is brighter than whatever vanilla bulb is in the other side (and the one it replaced).
If you really want to up the light output then you need to go for HID units - but they need high voltages and self levelling units so would be a pain to fit. All new LED units might be possible as some of them are apparently really good. If people ask me nicely I could try and get some brightness readings for these......
