Thanks all for your help. Jim, your remarks about screened cable was 
welcomed because I intend to wire the pug on the bench & solder onto the 
loom using heatshrink, & routing it a better way. Since I have done my 
tempory fix (pushing the bullet conectors back in tightly) the car seems to 
go much better. I suppose the poor connection was causing spurious signals.
