You can change the clutch by just lowering the gearbox end of the engine
down and taking the gearbox off.
You can usually get away with leaving most bits attached to the engine,
hoses, exhaust etc, just keep a good look out when you are lowering it
that nothing gets too tight.
Needs 2 trolley jacks or 1 and an engine crane and at least 2 people.
So, basically, disconnect battery.
Jack the car up at the front and put it on stands under the bulkhead or
sills (don't forget to use some wood the spread the load and rubber mat
on top of that will stop it slipping on the fibreglass.
Removing the nosecone makes things much easier but may depend on the
wiring to the front lights.
Undo the pinchbolts for the lower front suspension ball joints on both
sides and pull the ball joint down out of the hub carrier.
On the passenger side only i'd remove the track control arm and the tie
bar complete with the front bracket, just gives you a bit more working
space.
Make sure the nuts that hold the drivers side upper engine mount into
the bracket on the engine are tight.
Either, lever the inner driveshaft joints out of the gearbox with a
crowbar (which will mean catching all the oil and putting new in) or as
i do, remove the inner joint gaiter, rummage around in the grease and
find the internal circlip that holds the joint onto the shaft. This
circlip needs expanding outwards and you can slide the shaft out of the
joint.
Undo speedo cable, clutch cable, gearlinkage, starter motor, earth cable
etc.
Remove the plate next to the sump covering the bottom of the flywheel.
Put a trolley jack under the gearbox end of the sump, if you still have
the exhaust downpipe fitted you might need to find some suitable blocks
of wood.
The drivers side of the engine will be supported by the engine mounting
(this is why i said check the nuts are tight).
Remove the cradle from underneath the engine, you can leave the
mountings and there brackets attached to the gearbox.
Remove all but 2 of the gearbox to engine bolts and loosen the other 2
slightly.
Carefully lower the engine and gearbox until the end of the gearbox will
clear the lower edge of the subframe when it slides off, you it to come
need out about 60mm or so before you will be able to lower it.
Once the angle looks ok either put a trolley jack under the gearbox or
hook the engine crane onto the top of the gearbox.
Remove the final 2 bolts holding the gearbox on.
Slide it off the engine and lower to the ground.
Do not let the weight of the gearbox hang on the input shaft or you can
bend the shaft (supposedly, has anybody managed this ?).
Change the clutch.
Get the clutch centre plate aligned as good as you can, it makes a big
difference to how easily the gearbox goes back on, i use one of those
plastic cone tools you fix to the centre plate first.
Works much better than the old way of using a socket extension bar.
It's very useful to find a couple of long (>100mm) M10 bolts, cut the
heads off and you can screw them into the top 2 gearbox holes on the engine.
You can then slide the gearbox onto these to take some of the weight and
help get it aligned correctly.
Once it's on fit a couple of the other bolts and then remove the "studs".
Normally the gearbox either goes straight on or you will spend 30 mins
jiggling it about and slightly turning the crankshaft to try and get the
splines to line up.
The rest of the reassembly is the reverse of disassembly.
I expect somebody will spot something i've forgotten.
Oh, final thing, if it's a CVH there are 2 types of clutch assembly's,
normal and low lift, the parts are not interchangeable, all 3 parts of
the clutch need to be the same type. So best to buy a kit.
If you removed the driveshaft joints from the gearbox you should fit new
clips to them.
Have fun,
Jim

Hello all,
Having just decided not to do a full restoration on the Quantum, I'm
just going to attend to the items needing doing, on what is basically
a sound car.
So the first thing is clutch replacement. Has anyone any tips on the
easiest way of getting access to the clutch please? Bearing in mind,
I'm just a diy person, but am willing to tackle most things.
Thanks very much.
