The date of registration shown on the V5C may be the date of the donor car, or in more recent kit builds, the date the parts were turned into a Quantum. My Rickman Ranger has 'date of registration sept 1976' (original Escort) so this year I can apply to change it to Historic Vehicle and pay £0 instead of £240 :-). The Quantum is shown as 'date of registration Aug 2009' so I'll have to wait a long while! The black number plates aren't rolling, and apply to pre 1st January 1973 BUILT vehicles only. This is important for some cars that were built before then, but not registered until, say, March 1973. I’ve just read and interesting bit on the DVLA web site. Any vehicle registered more than 40 years ago (This rolls forward on 1st April every year), will be tax exempt and can have a black number plate.
