It all depends on how your saloon was built.
Some had the radiator on the engine bay side of the nosecone and some had it fitted inside the nosecone. The biggest issue is normally getting the bolts that hold the nosecone on undone.

You shouldn't really need a manual switch on the fan if everything is working correctly the fan should go on and off as required.

There are quite a few different temperature fan switches, they have different body colours I've seen Yellow, Green, Blue, Orange, Brown and Black. The brown and black are higher temperature. for the petrol engines, the other colours seem to be on the Diesels, or on some of the Zetecs when the switch is mounted in the hose or the radiator and has to compensate for the heat difference between that and the head.

Here are some numbers i found with Google:
                    On    Off
Orange       103     98
Blue            110     105
Black          103      98
Green          95      88
Yellow          95     90
Yellow        100     95
White         102     97

I'm not sure how accurate these are as they were all from different sources.

I would guess the red section would be around 110C, you normally want the fan to come on before it gets there. But, there is a lot of variation, like the fan switch, there are many different colours of temperature gauge sender, i think they start off matched to the gauges but as soon the engines get swapped around they no longer match and the gauges don't read as accurately.

Dear All,

Need to replace the coupe radiator as it is split.  Items available on ebay and elsewhere.

Looking at the job it looks like you have to remove the nose cone to replace it.  Or do you know of a way to get round that?

While the coolant system is empty I thought I would replace the thermostat and fan switch and check the wiring as they are relatively cheap and both seem to give regular trouble over the medium term.  Also thought I should run a manual fan switch for summer traffic queues peace of mind as well.

The Haynes manual has the spec for the thermostat temperature (opening 85C to 89C) but not the fan switch temperature.  I am looking at Lucas SNB710. The part seems to be the right fan switch and is says from 103C and to 98C which sounds fine but others I found were lower figures and of doubtful parentage!  Can anyone confirm the right temperatures?

I know the instrument is not very accurate, but what temperature is the start of the red arc on the top of the ford temp gauge?  I now have an infrared thermometer and can do some proper checking.

Thanks

Derek.
