Hi Hans
Those are opposite symptoms - fuel gauge shorted to earth (intermittently),
temp gauge open circuit. If there is a single cause a possibility (not
uncommon) is that the wiring loom has been chafing on the steering column
bracket. That's something that should be checked as a matter of urgency to nip
any more serious problems in the bud. By the way, if you haven't done it
before, removing the instrument cluster can seem quite daunting but it's
actually quite easy.
