Hi Derek. Jim is absolutely spot on (as always ) with his advice. I tried one
of the first (multi sizes) link ones a few years back – utter rubbish, I’d have
done better using a centre punch ☹
The second, hand -held one is a direct copy of my (very old) Sykes-Pickavent
hand-held one and they work very well. As Jim says, the flare has to be done in
one action. To do a double flare the flare tool is removed after the first
flaring, and turned around to do the second part to complete the double flare.
I’ve used mine for pipes of at least 3 kit cars including the Quantum,
including being doubled-up using it by hand under the Calvy Mitchel many years
ago. A first-class piece of kit. The expensive SP one may be easier to
use/slightly better? But can’t be used when the operator is on their back under
the car! Oh- ALWAYS remember to put the threaded fitting on the pipe before
doing the flare ………. Don’t ask me how I know 😊

I think the Fiesta uses DIN/ISO - I have just been doing some saloon rear lines
and braided hoses and used a DIN tool (Trident). If you do need to make the
female concave type flares (ice cream cone shape) you will need the SAE type
tool. I am pretty sure the SAE convex male flare will seal OK in a metric DIN
concave seat as flare just deforms as the union is tightened (with copper or
copper nickel pipes at least).

Ok, after some googleing, what i thought was a double flare is actually called
a bubble flare.
So, the Quantums have mostly bubble flares but there are some double flares on
there as well.

I think the Imperial and Metric brake pipe sizes are compatible, still seems to
be called 3/16”
I’ve certainly not bought a specific imperial or metric tool, just a brake pipe
tool.
Some of the joints are double flare so make sure your tool can do those.

Get a decent tool, the cheap ones are very hard to get proper flares.

This sort always seem to be poor.

I had one similar to this for a while, it was very good as long as you didn’t
need to take the pipe out and put it back in again, it wouldn’t  always grip if
you tried that.

I’ve got one of these now, very good but pricy.

Hi All,

Can anyone confirm the Q Coupe and 2+2 (i.e. Fiesta Mk2) Brake system?  I want
to get a flaring tool and think it is using a 4.75 DIN ISO 3/16" Single Bubble
Flare.  Is that correct?

Cheers

Derek
