Pickup pipe gasket is all i could think of.
I seen CVH engines with quite a bit of wear on the crankshaft nose where the
oil pump mates with it but i’d be surprised if it wore enough to not engage the
pump.

In the 2+2 you can get the crank shaft pulley off in the car if you loosen the
top engine mount nuts and push the engine across to the gearbox side.
I don’t know if that will work in the saloon.
Mind you, fitting new CVH sump gasket with the engine in the car is always
risky, i prefer to fit them with the engine upside down on a engine stand.

Yes cranking with plugs out. Also used some diesel heavy duty batteries
jumpered to do prolonged cranking. The usual culprit for cvh no oil pressure
(other than knackered pump) is pressure relief valve sticking open but I am
certain that is not the case here. I think either pump has somehow died through
lack of use or maybe the pickup pipe to pump gasket has started leaking. Quite
strange as no problems before lay up for car refurb/mods. I was hoping to get
saloon back on road very soon but looks like I am going to have to drop engine
and change the oil pump. Grrr.

That is a strange one, i don’t remember ever having an issue with the oil
priming on a CVH.
Apart from oiling all the bearings etc when assembling the engine, all i used
to do was half fill the oil filter with oil and that was it .

When cranking did you have the plugs out so it spins over faster ?

Subject: [Quantum Owners] Oil Pump Priming - CVH engine

I am having a problem getting any oil pump flow/pressure on cvh engine after
it has been sitting unused fo ages although turned over occasionally.
I assumed pump ihas dried out so have been attemting to get it primed again
but without success. Before lay up engine had no oil presuure problem.
I have tried various methods including:-
  Overfilling sump
  Filling filter
Pumping oil in via oil pressure switch port
Pushiing some Wynns/STP thick oil treatment into pressure relief valve port
Prolonged cranking of engine using multiple batteries
Starting engine and running for max 30 secs

So far have not got any indication of oil being sucked up and pumped - no
pressure indication on switch or gauge and no oil comming out of switch port.
The pressure relief valve has been removed/checked/cleaned several times - it
was not stuck in open position. The pump pickup is clean - I know as ichecked
when I fitted new sump.
Anyone got any other ideas? I want to avoid having to change pump (drop
engine job) if possible - especially as I know the pump was working fine before
lay up.
  Thanks
  John
