Just saw this, suggesting LGU may be a problem?

"The problem is NOT 10.5.2, but rather the Leopard Graphics Update that followed shortly on its heels. I just spent the day backing my computer up, formatting, and reinstalling everything. Except this time, I didn't install the Leopard Graphics Update.

In short, everything is working perfectly. Before reinstalling, with a certain sequence of events, I could reproduce the Graphics Freeze 100% of the time. In addition, overall graphics performance with things like Stacks was significantly choppier than before installing the LGU. Now, after reinstalling and not installing the LGU, after multiple attempts, I CANNOT reproduce the Freeze. Plus, my graphics performance is significantly faster and smoother than with the LGU installed.

An earlier poster said that machines that ran flawlessly before the LGU seem to be hosed by it, whereas machines that crashed before the LGU seem to be fixed by it. That would seem to be an accurate assessment, as my machine was fine without the LGU... and is ruined with it installed."

Interesting.

Just today in benchmarking an application I am working on, I noticed something similar.

Using 2 machines, my 2.33Ghz 3GB/ 256MB x1600 vs a others 2.4Ghz 4G/ 256 Nvidia 8600m

my machine: ~80-90
other machine: ~ 40-50fps

same type of discrepancy with various settings and compositions loaded.

I'm seeing very poor performance with the newest Mac Book Pro compared to prior models. Anyone else seeing this?

As a test, I render two 640x480 MotionJPEG movies to billboards. I'm seeing about 15-20fps on my newest MBP, whereas the prior model is getting about 50-100% higher frame rates (20-30 fps)

The slow "fast" machine:
Macbook Pro 15" 2.2GHz (most recent model)
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
128MB

The fast "slow" machine:
Macbook Pro 15" 2.33GHz (last year's model)
ATI Radeon X1600
256MB
