Thanks to everyone who chimed in on this. Glad to know I'm not
doing something stupid.

having just ordered a new macbook pro, i would really like to know
if this issue deals with all machiness with this card or relies on
certain conditions. also if the 512mhz card in the new mbp
fundamentally differs from previous models concerning this. is it
a known issue that can be dealt with by firmware, drivers etc by
apple, or is it actually the hardware? i'd rather have an honest
reply and cancel my order than receive the machine and being
disappointed for years. could we expect the same issue with
upcoming 8800 mobile?
Yes, I'd like to know this too. It leads me to think that it's a
problem with the recently issued Leopard Graphics Update but I'm
hoping it's limited to Quartz Composer, and can be fixed fairly soon.
Benchmarks with real-world tests (aka 3d shooter games) seem to
indicate the 8600-based macbook pros are faster than the old ones:

e.g. 50% or higher higher frame rates compared to the ATI1600 based
models.
So I'd say that this is probably a software issue, perhaps
quicktime / quartz are not well optimized for the 8600? Games
written by third parties typically bypass quicktime & quartz and use
direct open GL calls and undergo heavy optimization.
As for LGU: I was seeing the poor QC performance in 10.5.1 prior to
LGU. Didn't notice any particular change after LGU, other than my
mac started freezing: :-(
