id say use an offscreen transparent webview, like we do in the CogeWebKit plugin:
except an offscreen transparent window + readback (even on GPU) is ridiculously contrived for a simple animation format ;) Not that I'm one to dodge kludgy solutions at times, but this seems considerably more complicated that just writing my own imageIO plugin (or even a low-level gif reader, by hand!).
