Update: with some fiddling with sample code, I have written a basic movie file 
renderer which does a lot of what I need. It doesn't have all the bells & 
whistles of QuartzCrystal, but it does the job.

I'm not sure on the legalities of releasing tweaked Apple sample code as open 
source, but once I've tidied things up I'd be interested in sharing the code 
with anyone interested.

The sample in question was QTKitCreateMovie. I replaced the bunch of images 
read from disk with a bunch of snapshots from a QCRenderer.
