No, that's a fine way to do it. I started out that way but didn't
figure it out because I was missing the Mask To Alpha bit - so I moved
onto the CI blend modes. The shadows image is actually a live video
feed so I can't do much pre- QC, but your suggestion seems to work
perfectly. Thanks!

Ok,
You may just not want to do it this way, but...
I think the most efficient way to do this is with two Billboards,
and forgetting about CI blend modes.
Instead of making your hand the way that you are, make the hand area
white, and the background alpha black.
Place a clear on the Editor (Layer 1). Then, place your background
pic, connect it to a Billboard (Layer 2). Now, take your hand image,
modified for hand to be white, background alpha black, and then
connect that to a second Billboard (Layer 3). Turn the blend mode of
the second Billboard (the hand), to "over". Now you should see a
white hand on top of your background.
At this point, modifying the color of the second, "hand", Billboard,
will change exactly as you wish.
I'm attaching something that runs your hand image through a color
invert and a mask to alpha to get the result I'm talking about, but
again, I would do that in the image preparation ideally, so less
patches get used ultimately.
If you wanted to keep your method, you could make your hand art
something like red, and then a hue adjust patch would be able to
change to all types of colors, and I believe you should be able to
use an additional color controls to achieve black with the hand
(haven't tested this... but I believe think should work).

hi,
i'm trying to figure something out - i have two images.. one that's
a black shadow on a white background and another that we'll call the
"background" image. i want the black shadow to be superimposed on
the background image. i've attached a clunky composition (that
might be handy for others) - it shows the results of each of the
"Composition" patches against the two images. (you navigate with
the left/right arrows and can invert either image using the up/down
arrows) anyway.. what i'm trying to understand is how i could get
the superimposition to work AND change the color of the shadow (from
say, black to green). i've been monkeying around but haven't found
a solution. any ideas? in any case, maybe this composition comes
in handy for someone in the future....
thanks,
