I realised after I posted that tb was asking for a different order of
colouring (by type) to the arbitrary noodles-get-colour-when-patch-is-
selected that I was making a case for.
I also realised that all noodles that share an output port can &
should be the same colour in a auto-generated colouring schema. I
started my PS colouring from the input ports so that didn't occur to
me when painted it.
