What is actually happening that's unexpected? Is the scene getting it's view clipped, or is stuff flipping in reverse?
As an aside, I've found that the glu function stuff isn't too performant, it's really outdated (like, the opposite of "modern GL"), and drawing shapes and altering projection with OpenGL/CGLMacro stuff tends to be more reliable and perform quicker.
