Thanks Achim I was assuming it was OS X Lion window drawing magic (related to the auto-hidden sidebars) but maybe not. I switched to a newer OS X user on same Mac and the status bars are there (perhaps that's where I had been fleetingly seeing them before). Might be time to retire my main OS X user account which I migrated from Leopard Mac, I have trouble with the Kineme Networking Plugin in main user account too. Easiest way is prob to move on,.
