Thanks Achim

I was assuming it was OS X Lion window drawing magic (related to the 
auto-hidden sidebars) but maybe not. I switched to a newer OS X user on same 
Mac and the status bars are there (perhaps that's where I had been fleetingly 
seeing them before). Might be time to retire my main OS X user account which I 
migrated from Leopard Mac, I have trouble with the Kineme Networking Plugin in 
main user account too. Easiest way is prob to move on,. 

Thanks again for helping me clear it this up in my head. :-)
