I agree with Achim about checking the now hidden user library, particularly for incompatible versions of kineme alpha blend, gltools, and data tools, or any plugins or patches I guess.
Ideally, you should have all the stock patches that apple puts in the system folder in Graphics as well as Compositions, and nothing with permissions messed up (you can maybe check permissions with Disk Utility.app). Turning off the computer for a restart can be important if the gpu driver has ever encountered a bug/leak/stall while operating and can result in gpu crud but I'd guess the whole OS would be running foul at that point and it would be obvious.
