Dear Achim,

remarkable - no crashing any longer. If only I would understand what is causing the problem on 2 machines here. Could QC run less good on AMD graphics? Both my iMac and my laptop have AMD graphic cards.

Let's leave it like this - I will look into this patch and use it in the future instead. Isn't it a shame that Apple has close to zero documentation about the software, I didn't even know this patch.

Thank you so much again for your help, very much appreciated.

Best regards
Jurgen

Jurgen,

your composition runs with two particle systems on my machine. However, I replace the Image Transform patch with an Render In Image patch to get a clean untouched texture with transformation applied. Please test this composition if it works for you.

Hello Achim and everybody else,

I can now say with absolute certainty that the problem is not caused by my machine or residing 3rd party plugins: I installed GC into an iMac for the very first time, that iMac has a fresh OS X.9.4 install. There I remade the same composition (not copying it from my laptop) with identical results.
Actually even a single particle system would crash in this composition - only it takes longer, between a minute and 30 seconds. With 2 systems the crash is instantaneous.

I attach here the crashing patch. Both particle systems are disabled so I assume as nothing is being processed it should be safe to open without crashing. I use gif images with alpha channel as the image. With 'image transform' I rotate the image where the rotation is controlled by an LFO. That's all. I noticed that when I change the image size instant crash would follow. Images are inside the zipped folder.

Following George's comment I should perhaps try the Kineme particle system... :-)

Best regards
Jurgen

Jurgen,

thanks for sending me the crashlogs. (Please make sure, that you send the emails to the mailing list too!)

For them I can read that the crash happens in the AMD OpenGL driver (AMDRadeonX3000GLDriver). Maybe there is an update for it?

However, I also can see that you have installed many QuartzComposer plugins. There is a good chance that one of those causes this trouble. A good candidate could be the Particle Tools by Kineme located here:

/Users/USER/Library/Graphics/Quartz Composer Patches/ParticleTools 4.37.18 PM.plugin

You could try to remove all the plugins restart QuartzComposer and see if you still have crashing issues with two particle systems. if not, add one by one to find the bad one.

Also you can create another user in your system just to see, if the problem is system wide or just something your have installed in user domain.

Hi there,

I'm at a beginner's stage and I want to create a composition with several particle systems. I wan to use gif images with an alpha channel, each system with a differnt image.

The moment the 2nd system starts to emit QC would crash, sometimes _very_ bad with a kernel panic.

I'm on OS X.9.4 Mavericks. I'm going through the "Learning Quartz Composer" book - the author suggests to create compostiions with more than one particle system so it should not be an issue.

Does anybody know what is causing the crash and how to avoid it?

Thanks
Jurgen
