I've asked in qubes-users, but those details should be most well
understanded by developers than users, so ask here:

AFAIR, when App VM is started some image files are made. Are these
files are made in /var/lib/qubes/appvms or also in
/var/lib/qubes/vm-templates ?

Is there an option to tune where the temp images are created when an
AppVM or TemplateVM is executed?

I've two terabyte drives in my laptop - ssd and hdd and want to make
most writes to go on hdd and most reads from ssd. If I'll use separate
mount point on ssd for /var/lib/qubes/vm-templates - would it give me
any perfomance improvement?

Yes, I understand this won't turn off writes to ssd when template VM
is upgraded.
Yes, I could use a file system like btrfs, but I prefer to use ext3 or
ext4, as stable
enough and manage write/read by hands (i.e. by mount point separation), not by
file system extra intellect.
