The main problem was that the SSD was not recognised as a destination device. I eventually bought a 64Gb Sandisk Ultra USB3 stick and it installed immediately without problems. That was even more surprising as I only have USB2 ports on the PC. I now have a happy Qubes installation that I can carry around.
