Ok, so I restarted and the problem starting VMs has been resolved. I am most likely technologically out of my depth with Qubes but that is how I typically learn (I have ADHD and asperger's and an atypical learning style). I was concerned that, not understanding the error well, it might replicate upon restarting, leaving me with a command line significantly more intimidating than those of the Ubuntu / Debian etc. systems that I am more used to.
