Have you tried installing the bridge in a templateVM like debian9? I have installed the bridge in both Qubes 3.2 and Qubes 4 in the template debian 9. Then I created an app based on debian 9 called protonmail where I started the bridge and put all my credentials in and connected it to Thunderbird like described in their instructions. Worked well for me ever since. Updates have to be installed in the templateVM as well.
