Turns out that whatever application tries to load multiple drivers and use both
of
them at the same time.
First, check that there are two drivers being loaded.
user@sys-net$ lsmod | grep rtl
Yes? Blacklist one.
adding "blacklist rtl8xxxu" to the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
will solve the problem.

A quick google search for others having problems shows many non-answers by the
elusive dodo birds of the internet.
-People saying "It does work, whats wrong with you?" on kali and hacking
forums.
-The almost excellent post on the ubuntu forums (link above) tells us to
blacklist the wrong driver.
