That's because gnome-terminal calls gnome-terminal-server and then
exits so the dispVM exits. See:

Thank you! This makes sense. I've taken the easier approach and just
started using xterm, as the link suggests.
You may want to customize xterm to look like gnome-terminal (see the
links in a former ML post):
