Ah it was Rufus on Windows that I tried first, but that refused to boot from 
the USB at all. The ThinkPad troubleshooting page I linked to seems to agree 
with me.

Although I’ve seen that people have had success switching to Legacy mode and 
using the Rufus-created image?
