[1] "linux-firmware-20180402-83" was released missing the file "amdgpu/polaris11_k_mc.bin". [2] "linux-firmware-20181219-89" seems to fix the issue. Most, if not all, Radeon GPUs based on Polaris 11 (Radeon RX 460/560 / Pro 450/455/460/560) attempting to install Qubes 4.0.2-rc1 ends up with the error "X startup failed, aborting installation". In dmesg, you get something like: kernel: mc: Failed to load firmware "amdgpu/polaris11_k_mc.bin" kernel: amdgpu 0000:01:00.0: Fatal error during GPU init I had a 4.0.2-rc1 working with a Radeon RX 560, [3] installing Qubes with a kickstart file and [4] installing "linux-firmware-20190514-96.fc29".
