I sort of figured that.  The bad part is that the roof is 2 stories up
and I don't like heights.  I'm also a little worried about having to
extend the cable.  I'm powering off a USB port at the moment.

The power cable is no problem, it can be as long as you like.

Similarly, 4800 baud serial connections can also be stretched quite a ways, or you could even look into a proper extender, but that might give you problems re. the PPS quality.
