I'm not criticizing people for using them. I work in a company where (among
other services) we provide ISP to our clients, as you can imagine we can't
"afford- if you know what I mean :)" to have the Linksys or SMCs, or any
other crap routers. It would be really nice if some companies could rely in
one of those routers, but my point is not that nor I meant to criticize the
companies that use them. As I said before " if you're happy with it, keep
it".

Many companies use these Linksys retail box DSL/Cable "routers" as their
edge devices. I understand what you are saying about not using an external
time source as a security standpoint, but that introduces suggestions, as
Meinolf indicated, to purchase additional resources to have an internal
private stratum, which I *assume* you want to sync with an external
source. Either way, the external sources are reliable, and whether
synching the PDC Emulator, or a private stratum.

The Linksys BEFR81 has served me well for the last eight or nine years.
Even if I could afford a "real" router e.g. a Cisco SOHO router, there's
not a thing it could do for me to justify the *very* substantial price.
I would also have to purchase another eight port switch since the Cisco
box would ONLY act as a router. Comcast provides routing along with the
bandwidth I'm paying for.
What could I expect from an SMC router/switch that the Linksys box does
not do?
