I was under the impression from prior comments that FreeBSD etc, was
good for older lower power machines.  But if you need turbo nutterbuster
PC's to build it in the first place, just to enable PPS ????

As another datum for you, rebuilding the kernel on FreeBSD 5.4 on a 133MHz Pentium with 48MB of memory took "several hours". I think I left it running overnight. No other rebuilding was required - the supplied NTP worked with a GPS/PPS source once configured.
