ntpd will step the clock if it is more than 128ms out. 

You could look at the time offset, and increase the rate of the clock
until you have made up that offset. Or run chrony which will do that for
you. 


Remember it could take a long time. AT 500PPM, it will take a day and a
half to get rid of a 1 minute offset.
