Yes, GPS without PPS is mostly not better than Internet pool servers.
But still, the polling time depends on the stability of the PC's
internal clock. That mostly depends on temperature swings.

I can't get Ron to try serial PPS at the moment, but I'm sure he will
come
round to it!
I also found at one stage that the polling time wouldn't increase when
you
had a ref-clock and internet servers on the same PC - something to do
with
the loop time constant IIRC was Dave Mills explanation, and the only way
which worked for me was minpoll 10 for the Internet servers. For me,
they
are only an emergency backup.
