Don't do it if you need accuracy. If you can't run ntpd on the bare metal (e.g. for security reasons, or because the platform doesn't support it) and if you can't justify dedicating a small box to ntpd then I assume that accuracy won't be a significant factor for you. ntpd will probably still work when run in a VM, but the stability of the clock (and therefore the accuracy of the time served) will be far worse than running ntpd on the bare metal of the same machine.
