Trophy hunters getting tax breaks!
An undercover investigation by The Humane Society of the United States has revealed a brazen trophy hunting tax scam. As reported in Tuesday morning's Washington Post (free registration required), some trophy hunters have been financing their destructive hobby at taxpayers' expense by "donating" their animal trophies to pseudo-museums. The trophy hunter receives a sizable tax write-off, and, as our investigators discovered, the "museums" rarely display the donated trophies, leaving them to collect dust in storage. The astonishing result? Hunters can essentially write-off, at taxpayers' expense, the entire cost of traveling to a canned hunt in the United States�plus killing, stuffing, mounting, and shipping his or her animal trophy. Congress is already investigating possible abuses in how non-cash donations are appraised and donated to nonprofits--animal trophies are a prime example of this abuse.
