McCartney offers a win win sollution to stop the
Canadian seal slaughter, 3-25-06

CHARLOTTETOWN -- Rock icon Paul McCartney and his
wife, Heather Mills,
have
issued another appeal for Canada to end the East Coat
seal hunt.

The plea came as hunters and protesters prepare to
head out onto the
ice for
the start of the annual hunt today.

McCartney said yesterday in a video message from
London that it's time
for
the Canadian government to consider a licence buy-back
program to
compensate
sealers while ending a hunt that is facing mounting
international
condemnation.

"This is a win-win solution," McCartney said in a
message shown to
reporters
in Charlottetown by the Humane Society of the United
States. "Fishermen
would be compensated for any lost revenue when the
hunt is closed and
Canada
would have a graceful way to put an end to a cruel and
needless
practice."

The couple visited a seal nursery in the Gulf of St.
Lawrence earlier
this
month.

They said they had to come before the hunt began
because it would have
broken their hearts to see such beautiful animals
killed.

At least 325,000 seals, most of them between 2 weeks
and 3 months old,
will
be harvested in this year's hunt.

The Humane Society of the United States is one of
several groups
protesting
this year's hunt.

The society is behind a global boycott of Canadian
seafood, which is
attempting to pressure Ottawa into ending the hunt by
cutting off
markets.
Anti-hunt forces are also pushing for more bans on
seal products.

The United States is one of several countries that has
banned the
importation of marine mammal products.

Canadian officials defend the hunt as an economic
benefit. They also
say it
controls the size of seal herds, which helps depleted
fish stocks
recover.
