7. The Buzz on H.264
.....................

Tim Siglin writes for StreamingMedia.com, "A year ago this week,
StreamingMedia.com posted an article titled 'H.264 Begins Its Ascent.'
In it, I noted that while H.264 had [been] declared dead in some
corners, it appeared to be poised for growth in 2005."

"I was wrong. With the benefit of hindsight, I see now that I totally
underestimated the foothold that H.264 would gain in late 2005, with the
advent of the iPod Video, and the impact H.264 would have as we move
into 2006. As recently as last week, I surmised that iPod Video sales
would increase the use of H.264 video, but numbers released yesterday by
Apple at Macworld 2006 show that the last quarter of 2005 far outpaced
any previous quarter for H.264 adoption."

8. Hot Tips
............

The latest book in Morgan Kaufmann's QuickTime Developer Series,
"QuickTime for .NET and COM Developers," is available now. Written by
John Cromie, one of the architects of the new QuickTime 7 ActiveX
control and COM library, the book is a practical guide to the use of
QuickTime for application developers using popular Microsoft
component-oriented development tools such as Visual Basic and the new
.NET tools--Visual Basic.NET and C#.NET.

A general introduction to QuickTime features and their potential
application is followed by a detailed explanation of the QuickTime
architecture from a COM and .NET perspective. The remainder of the book
demonstrates a number of implementation samples, chosen to illustrate
key QuickTime features. These samples will range from a simple
multiple-window movie player to a sophisticated interactive application.

Additionally, the book also includes chapters on scripting QuickTime
Player and using QuickTime in MS Office applications.
